Marlene caught Dash eyeing Jaycee. Wiping the spot next to him, she slid a fresh paper placemat and napkin-wrapped silverware in front of the empty stool.
"Never gonna happen."
He smiled confidently, a plan forming in his head. Turning to face the counter, he gave her a winning smile, "It's only a matter of fried chicken."
Marlene smiled at his answer, then raised an eyebrow.
"What's only a matter of fried chicken?" Jaycee repeated. She came to stand near Dash with her hand on her hip.
He took a long pull on the pop and braced his two hands against the counter, turning and leaning over in his stool so his eyes were level with Jaycee's.
"You and me," he said slowly, letting his lips roll over the words as they carried to her on a breath and sank against the softness of her cheeks. Her beautiful light-green eyes narrowed and her full lashes fell in quick succession as she blinked rapidly.
"Y-you and me? And fried chicken?"
"That's right, darlin'."
"Don't you darlin' me, Dash. I know what comes after your 'darlin'. Sure enough, I'm in your sights, but I'm leaving this town, not stayin' and settin' up a Mom and Pop with you."
Marlene had wandered away once she saw Jaycee's temper flare. Jaycee was but three inches from his face. His gaze lazed on her lips and then swiftly found her eyes again.
"Don't let the future overwhelm the moment," he whispered quietly. He reached for her hand, just running his thumb across the top of it and then let it go.

Set in Twain, Georgia, we meet Jaycee who has quite a temper and has broken down... again! Who should come along but Dash Matheson who earned the nickname Hot Flash Dash way back in high school. He persuades her to let him mend her convertible. Cost? Going with him to the church, July 4th, picnic.Jaycee is fed up with living in the same ol' town her whole life and so decides to go visit her friend Kitty in New York even though Dash has declared an interest. Will she enjoy the city life or will something happen to draw her back?
The author has done an excellent job on the southern drawl. This is Book 1 of 4 so does NOT have an ending. I have to be honest and say it did not draw me in enough to want to go purchase the rest of the series even though they are very reasonably priced. Easy read and for those of you who love a good, clean, Christian based romance then you are sure to love this.

Summer Faith Love and Fried Chicken Book 1 edition by Laura J Marshall Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Because I read fast, this was a very quick read for me, but quite enchanting! Set in Georgia, it reminds you of how you can be missing what's right in front of you until it's almost taken away. As soon as I finished, I couldn't wait to read the next one. Full of quick humor and endearing characters, this is a story I deeply enjoyed! I'm only sorry that I'll have to wait until next year for the 4th installment -(
This was a short read and the first of four books.
Dash finally gets the courage up to let his feelings for Jaycee become a reality. Jaycee isn't sure what she wants out of life. She goes to visit her best friend and while she is gone, something happens to Dash. She knows what
she is supposed to do and where she is supposed to be.
Jaycee, twenty-something, is tired of small-town life, yet Dash Matheson, a suitor that has pursued her since elementary school, finally appeals to her giving nature and snags her interest. Marshall clearly writes southern well, from the pulled taffy to the colloquial phrasing she inspires the reader to slip into the life of Jaycee and Dash as their lives begin to intertwine. Do read this, and then go read the read of t he series. You'll be able to taste the Fried Chicken, promise!
Very predictable, though made no sense that they went to high school together, is now 10 years later, they've both lived in a small town & he's loved her for years. Then why wait a decade?! She was wary of him -- for 10 years? Two highly attractive people in a small town staying single for that long seemed like a stretch.
I loved this book! It took me back to the carefree days of when I used to live in the south. The meaning of family, friendship, and community is amazing there, shown perfectly in this story. The author did a fantastic job of characterization and plot, and has a real winner here! I can't wait to read the rest! Great job, Ms. Marshall! You're one fine storyteller! Keep writing and thank you for introducing me to your characters, Jaycee and Dash. True love in the making, for sure.
Jaycee has been saving for excitement every since high school. She plans to leave rural Twain, Georgia, but she doesn't know the "to where" or the "to what". Will her intentions change when Dash Matheson pulls her wandering heart in his direction during the Fourth of July in this small southern town? Will Jaycee find love? This is book 1 in the Faith, Love, and Fried Chicken series, but can be read as a stand alone.
I'll preface this by saying I'm not much into romance novels, but that's because they get too steamy, and I have to scrape my retina afterwards. That's where this one found favor. It's sweet, romantic--and clean! The characters are real, the details of Georgia summer life vivid, and the dramatic tension at the end demands I go on to read the sequel.
My only beef (chicken?) is that Jaycee had supposedly been resisting Dash for years, but by the time we join the story, she changes her mind pretty quickly. I would have liked for the story to start a little further back to see the "battle" more, so that her falling for him would be a bigger triumph.
That said, I'd have found it hard to resist Dash! He's delicious!
